Friends Of The Park – Information Meeting

Wednesday, May 28th, 2025. 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Be part of a meaningful community of neighbors keeping the park beautiful, welcoming, and vibrant. Whether you love gardening, helping at community events, or just want to give back – we’d love to have you!

Something very special happens in a community when families and individuals from all walks of life gather to enjoy themselves and each other in a quality community gathering space like Winrock Park.   If you have the time and interest, we are looking to our neighbors for a small army of park stewards.  Winrock Park belongs to the community, and it cannot be truly successful without the community’s help.    This is an opportunity to contribute to the quality of life in our neighborhood.  Our staff will assist and educate our guests and help keep our park clean and safe.  You will be instructed by and work side-by-side with our staff.  There will be monogrammed hats, T-shirts, vests, and jackets for our team members as well as special events, opportunities, and award dinners exclusively for our staff.  You will be part of a small, tight-knit group of people who truly care.  Stewards can be generalists, or they can specialize and help the park in one or more of the following areas.

Landscaping

Winrock has many landscape islands and landscape areas, and we need help in planting, pruning, fertilizing, weed and pest control, extra watering, and propagation.  We supply all tools, guidance, and materials.  A group of neighbors is welcome to adopt an island and show off their botanical skills.  We also have areas for community gardens.  We will be engaging students from neighboring schools in our agricultural activities.  We also have a number of orchard trees and fruit, and vegetable plants that require care in and around the park.

Bird Care

We have a number of bird feeders and nests around the park that need care and maintenance throughout the year.  We have a series of cameras in and around our nests and feeders so that our park guests can watch real-time from monitors in our education center, the feeding, nest building, egg laying, hatching, feeding, and parenting of our feathered guests.  The cameras are equipped with AI that will identify every bird.  We will also feed and care for a number of aquatic birds that visit us.

Aquatic Life Care

Our ponds require monitoring for water quality, plant care, and aquatic harmony.  We have fish, turtles, frogs, and birds in our ponds that need care and feeding.  We will be setting up three islands that will have specific habitats and a classic wooden rowboat to service them.  We will also have a program of miniature classic sailboats and powerboats that will operate in the ponds.

Special Events Staff

This year, Winrock will have over 200 special events, most of which are free to our community.  We need your help in preparing for, monitoring, and assisting guests who attend our various markets, concert series, and other events.

The Education Center

Winrock will host the Cebrin Goodman Education Center, which will be supported by a group of dedicated environmental specialists as well as students of the Cebrin Goodman Youth, Leadership, and the Environment Program at the Bosque school.  The Education Center will champion the natural environment around us in the park, our city, and our state while focusing on our environmental challenges.  The center will have monitors and exhibits featuring wildlife in the park and our community,y as well as important experiments being undertaken by our students.  We need help in maintaining and monitoring the education center and its interaction with our visitors.

Join us on May 28 from 5–7 PM at the Farmers Market patio to explore how your time and talents can make a lasting impact.
