TRISH TOLEDO

From Carson, California, a community south of Los Angeles, Trish Toledo was born into an Ecuadorian-Guatemalan family with much older siblings. Their musical tastes – plus the influence of her father, who was a musician – provided her with access to music that existed long before her time. Although the first music she sang was cumbias and ballads, she discovered that it was the timeless pop and soul ballads that she felt most connected to. “The lyrics were so simple and the performances so raw and clean,” she remembers.

While her father’s musical influences permeated her childhood, it was his “musician’s life” that accounted for his absence from the family. Subsequently, when she became a teen parent herself, Trish put her own musical aspirations on hold to offer undivided attention as a mother. In May 2017, now old enough to realize his mother’s formidable vocal abilities, it was her 11-year son that noted the void in his mom’s life, as he encouraged her to reestablish her musical journey.

Exploring a classic catalog of material, Trish selects songs to record based on how the themes most faithfully mirror her life experiences. ”What I have gone through, or am going through,” she says. She prefers to record much like her predecessors did – in one take, all the way through, without punch ins and overdubs. Her cross-generational audiences include both older listeners who grew up with the type of songs she sings, to young fans for whom this music is brand new.

When she is not performing or recording, Trish explores art shows. She is especially interested in the vibrant visuals of Chicano art, and her multiple tattoos bear visual testimony to her appreciation of shapes and colors.Trish Toledo does what she does best: sings, performs, and connects a historic line between the music of an earlier era, and the audiences of today. “People are so happy that I’m reviving this music,” Trish concludes. “ Bringing it back – so that a new generation gets to hear this.”

JACOB SHIJE TRIO

Jacob Shije, an Indigenous musician from Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, embodies the spirit of rock’n’roll with his band, the Jacob Shije Trio. Influenced by the legendary sounds of Link Wray, Buddy Holly, and Ritchie Valens, Jacob’s passion for rockabilly drives him to share the infectious energy of rock & roll with his audience. Jacob, alongside bassist Tanya Nunez of Ysleta del Pueblo and drummer Royce Platero of the Navajo Nation, the Jacob Shije Trio aims to celebrate the timeless legacy of rock & roll while infusing it with their own flair, creating a musical experience that resonates far beyond the stage.

BLACK PEARL BAND

Ruben Barreras Jr, plays alto/ tenor saxaphone, sings background vocals  and is the leader of Black Pearl Band NM.  Ruben started playing saxophone at the age of ten and he also plays accordion, bass guitar, guitar, trumpet, and keyboard.  Ruben has played with several New Mexico bands such as Los Musicos De Cristo, Expression, The Albuquerque Police Department Band “The Force”, and Latin Society.  Ruben’s musical influences include his father Ruben Barreras Sr.( Musicos De Cristo),  George Strait, Little Joe, Jimmy Edwards, Kool and the Gang, and KC and the Sunshine Band.

Paul Marquez plays alto, baritone, and tenor saxophone. Paul started playing saxophone in elementary school and was inspired by his father and grandfather. Paul has performed with the bands Los Enamorados, Reunido and Crossroads. Paul’s musical influences are the classic orquesta Tejano bands (The Latin Breed, Tortilla Factory, Sunny Ozuna and The Royal Jesters) and the funk stylings of Tower of Power. Paul has been part of the NM music scene for over three decades.

Roger Saiz begin playing drums at the age of 15 years old.  He has played with various bands throughout the years.  Those bands include: Purple Haze, Kool Brass, Tiempo, Crossroads, The Duke City Boys, Lumbre and now The Black Pearl Band of New Mexico.  He also had the honor in playing  with Al Muniz, Johnny Hernandez and Jerry Lopez while performing with Crossroads. His musical influences are John David Garibaldi of Tower of Power and Aaron Holler, former drummer for Jay Perez.

Rounding out the band’s sound and support are Ruben Barreras Jr. on bass guitar, lead vocalist Ralph Miramontes, who also sings background vocals, and trumpeters Apollo Armendariz and Louie Alarcon.
