Winrock Town Center History

A New Mexico Landmark
Restored to Its Former Glory

Winrock Town Center’s history as a premier shopping destination formed the foundation for a new kind of shopping experience at the cutting edge of green urban development. The 83 acre mixed use development has been re-designed from the ground up to combine retail, entertainment, office, and hospitality facilities with environmentally responsible development. Take a trip through time with us and explore the past, present, and future of an iconic landmark.

Beginning

Winrock at the Beginning

Winrock opens in 1961. The first modern covered mall in New Mexico, the landmark is jointly developed by the University of New Mexico and Winthrop Rockefeller. With 4,000 parking spaces and a mix of regional and local retailers, the mall serves as a destination for the rapidly expanding suburbs of Northeast Albuquerque. The development includes Safeway, J.C. Penney, Fedway and Montgomery Ward. A freestanding movie theater and an attached motor hotel open in 1963.

1970 to 2007

Winrock Evolves

Continued expansion in the late '60s and early ‘70s sees the addition of more stores and construction of Dillard’s department store. Construction of the 'pyramid' atrium expands the interior space significantly. Retail activity in the area increases as Coronado Mall opens and the area becomes a commercial center. ABQ Uptown opens, solidifying the Uptown area as the premier retail destination for Albuquerque and surrounding areas. Plans are announced by then owner PruWinrock LLC for the expansion and re-development of "an open-air large-format community center." In 2007, Goodman Realty Group acquires the property and begins a new redevelopment process, working with the local community to develop a long term mixed use masterplan that includes 1,500,000 square feet of new office, retail, restaurant, residential units, and a hotel, all set amid eco-friendly parks and plazas.

2007 to Today

Change of Ownership

Goodman Realty Group signs long term leases with multiple restaurants including Genghis Grill, BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse, Dave & Busters. New structures are built on the property for new retail tenants including Nordstrom Rack, DSW, and Ulta. Additional tenants sign leases, and Winrock Town Center comes to life as Goodman Realty continues their plans for further development.

The Future
